The traditional Alpenschloss Elmau was built between 1914 and 1916 during the First World War on the secluded plateau between Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Mittenwald. Under the management of Dietmar Müller-Elmau, it became a luxury hotel in 1997.

The castle has also developed into an intellectual centre and music forum. In August 2005, the castle was severely damaged by fire.
